Farewell & Thanks

Retirement of Patsy Grogan, GT / Brian O’Mahony
After 40 years of service, Patsy Grogan will be retiring from ESB on Friday 21st May 2021. Patsy spent his first year in Civil Works Department, before moving to the Erne hydro stations for 3 years. Having returned from Donegal in 1985, he resumed working in CWD on the construction of area offices and sub stations. In 1987, Patsy moved to the engineering consultancy area, then known as External Activities, working on projects in Ghana and Saudi Arabia. Patsy joined ESBI on its formation in 1989 and continued working on projects at home and abroad. One such project was the complete rehabilitation of the Electricity Sector in Lebanon, for which he spent 1995/96 in Beirut as part of an ESBI project management team responsible for project supervision on behalf of the funding agencies European Investment Bank and The World Bank. In 1997, Patsy landed what he describes as his dream job on the Aran Islands when ESB was connecting the offshore islands to the mainland electricity network via submarine cable and he oversaw the construction of the landing positions. In 1998, he moved to ESB Networks (known then as Distribution Department). He spent the following 10 years on the civil design of 38kV overhead lines, particularly on conflict resolution. In 2009, he transferred to what is now Generation and Trading as Civil Engineer responsible to the Thermal Stations.
Patsy will now be able to pursue his many interests on a full-time basis, including his love of bee keeping, for which he is widely known throughout ESB. Many of us will be hoping that he continues to provide us with occasional pots of honey. Patsy has made many friends during his long career in ESB and continues to keep in touch, even with those in the first office that he worked in 40 years ago. I am sure that all his colleagues, past and present, will want to wish Patsy, his wife Mary and his family all the best for the future and a long and happy retirement.
Unfortunately, due to the COVID 19 restrictions it is not possible to celebrate Patsy’s retirement with him in person, as we would like to do, but hopefully we will be able to mark Patsy’s retirement later in the year when restrictions ease further.

Retirement of Joe Harris, ESBN / Kevin Harrington
On Wednesday the 12th May 2021, Joe Harris of the Customer Delivery Operations Team in Limerick, retires from ESB Networks after nearly 45 years dedicated service. Joe is well known and appreciated widely around ESB Networks, primarily for his specialist major metering work within the Limerick, Newcastlewest, Ennis, Tipperary and Roscrea PGs but also for his MD metering work with the Renewables Team in recent years. Joe’s full career has been spent in Metering and Operations in Limerick except for a one year sabbatical in Limerick Stations. Joe’s expert metering knowledge and experience will be greatly missed, while his personality and friendship will too be missed by the Limerick Customer Delivery Team and the many others around ESB Networks who had the pleasure of knowing or working with Joe. We would all like to wish Joe all the best in his retirement and look forward to a date in the not too distant future where we can raise a glass socially, to mark this fantastic career and life milestone. Well done Joe and thanks for everything over the last 45years.

Retirement of Mike Malone, Rosbrien /
After 43 years’ service Mike has decided to avail of VS with his final day at work falling on 12th May. Mike began his career in ESBN as an apprentice electrican in the old Limerick district and following his appointment began working in the Service/repair Dept. There followed a wide variety of roles in Public lighting, 10/20Kv conversion and finally ending up in the Renewables management section where his versatility came to the fore as a COW, cable commissioner to name but a few of the roles Mike excelled in. I’m sure I speak for all my colleagues when I describe Mike as professional and courteous in all his interactions, be they with ESB staff or the general public, I believe the word “gentleman” best describes him. Due to Covid restrictions Mike has had to postpone a planned celebration but as soon as restrictions allow we will organise an event to mark the occasion. In the meantime, on behalf of the organisation I would like to wish Mike and Family long life and happiness into the future.

Retirement of Seamus Gilligan, Regional Prog Implementation Mgr, PD North / Eoin Waldron
After 42 years of outstanding service, our friend and colleague Seamus Gilligan is retiring from ESB. Seamus joined ESB in 1979 as a general worker. His ability and strong work ethic was recognised at an early stage and he was appointed as linesman and then a chargehand linesman. He then left the tools behind to take up a role as an Engineering Officer. Seamus was appointed to the role of Supervisor in 1998. He worked as supervisor in a number of areas including Network Projects, Customer Services Supervisor and Technical Services Supervisor for many years. Seamus used his vast technical knowledge and customer focus to help deliver works in the Sligo area and beyond. In 2016 he took up the Programme Coordinator role within the northern region. Seamus was able to use his experience of delivering work as a supervisor to help others deliver work programmes. In 2019 Seamus was appointed to the role of Regional Programme Implementation Manger following OER. Seamus was always willing to share his knowledge with others and although he has been based in Sligo, his influence has stretched country wide. Seamus’ last day in work will be Friday 28th May, a MS Teams call will take place at 2pm on Fri 28th to mark his retirement.
If you would like to be included on the call, please email mailto:eoin.waldron@esb.ie
On behalf of all in ESB I’d like to thank Seamus for his many years of dedicated service. I am sure you will all join with me in sending best wishes to Seamus and his family and hoping he enjoys a long, healthy and happy retirement.

Retirement of Tom Hayes, GT Ardnacrusha / Martin Stronge
After more than 39 years of dedicated service Tom Hayes is hanging up the wellingtons. Tom is currently on annual leave until his retirement date and last day in ‘the office’ on Friday 28th May.
Tom started work in 1981 at ESB in Civil Works Department in Stephen Court in Dublin and continued there moving into ESBI when it was formed. In the mid 1990’s Tom moved to Ardnacrusha Station as Services Manager. From 1999 to 2007 Tom worked as Group Civil Engineer for Thermal Stations providing a service to Moneypoint, Tarbert, Poolbeg, North Wall, Aghada, Marina and some midlands stations. From 2007 until recently Tom was Supervising Engineer for Ardnacrusha/ Lee Hydro Stations. During his career in ESB Tom has worked with many wonderful colleagues and made many lifelong friendships. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, we are unable to celebrate Tom’s retirement in person at the moment. However, no doubt there will be an opportunity to celebrate his career as soon as restrictions allow.
