Farewell & Thanks

Retirement of Colin McMahon / Anne Marie McDermott After 40 years of dedicated service, Colin McMahon will be retiring from ESB on Wednesday, 12th May 2021. Following a few years as a Lighthouse Keeper all across the nation, Colin joined ESB and started his career as a Storeman in Dundalk Stores, in the Laurels. For a number of years, Colin also was the public face of ESB when he worked in the Cash and Enquiries Office in The Long Walk. He also worked in Payroll, Stores, Expenditure Accounting and most recently in Project & Fixed Asset Accounting Unit, where he was the expert in all things HV related. Colin’s thoroughness, enthusiasm and breadth of knowledge has been invaluable, and he has made a noteworthy and positive contribution to the success of ESB. For a long spell, Colin was very active in Dundalk Social Club, organising many Christmas Parties and Outings for staff. He also distinguished himself by serving as Dundalk’s representative for SAVVI (St. Patrick’s) Credit Union, for a long number of years. In addition to being a Fire Marshall in Avenue Road, Colin also served as a ‘Dignity in the Workplace’ representative, up until his retirement.
Colin’s amiable personality and terrific sense of humour has ensured that he made many good and long-standing friendships with staff, right across ESB. He will be missed by all, particularly his friends in Avenue Road, Dundalk and most especially, in the Project and Fixed Asset Accounting Unit. On behalf of all of us, we wish to thank you Colin for the tremendous contribution you have given to ESB, over the course of your career. We will miss your tremendous sense of fun, interesting chats and your regular office Lotto updates. We wish you good health and happiness to enjoy every minute of your retirement with your wife Gretta, your sons, grandson and all your family.
Unfortunately, due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, it is not possible to celebrate Colin’s retirement with him, in person, as we’d really like to do. However, we look forward to celebrating with Colin, later in the year, when we can give him the proper send-off that he deserves. Very good luck to you Colin.

Retirement of Martin McCormack / John Tuohy
Our friend and colleague Martin McCormack will retire on 14th May after more than 42 years dedicated service to ESB.
Martin started in Mullingar in 1979 and trained as a linesman. He progressed on to become a chargehand before being appointed Lines Supervisor in Mullingar in 1990. In 1993 he was appointed Project Supervisor. Martin moved to the Contracting Partners organisation in the early 2000s and played an important role as a project leader in the Network Renewal Programme which refurbished the Networks nationally in a short period of time.
Martin then moved on to work in the Safety organisation as Safety and Quality Assurance Manager where he was instrumental in developing the auditing function. In 2015, Martin moved to the environmental organisation where he has been a prime mover in Networks excellent waste management and re-cycling performance. Martin has managed a large number of our external service providers and ably handled some complicated tender awards.
Everybody who has met Martin has been struck by his warmth and humanity and interest in people’s wellbeing. He has combined these qualities over the years with an appetite for hard work which has contributed hugely to ESB.
Unfortunately, due to Covid, we cannot celebrate Martin’s retirement as we would like at this time. In the meantime, I would like to thank Martin for his huge contribution to ESB and wish him a long and happy retirement.

RIP

Thanks from Anne O’Neill / Patricia Nolan My family and I would like to thank ESB staff, both current and retired, who phoned, posted condolences, sent messages, emails, cards and flowers and to those who were able to join us outside after the funeral mass following the recent passing of our much loved Mam, Nancy O’Toole. We are really grateful for your kindness and support for us at this very sad time. Your thoughtfulness is truly appreciated and will be remembered always. Thank You, Anne
