Farewell & Thanks

Stephen Ryan retires today, 7th Oct / Ted O’ Connell
Stephen Ryan has decided to move on to the next chapter, following 44 years of dedicated service to ESB. He retires exactly 44 years later, on the date he entered the company. Stephen Started his career in Gracedieu on the 7th of October 1977, rotated through all aspects of work in the old Waterford district, especially enjoying UG cable and HV station work. He qualified in 1981, started in Stations dept. Waterford, worked on the upgrading of Arklow 220kV stn., meter security and Group operations on the UG system.

In 1984 he seconded to the Electricity Supply Commission in Zimbabwe spending three happy years on operations and fault hunting in the African bush and doing the occasional cable joint!
1987, he returned to ESB in Waterford and resumed his fascination with the underground system. He then moved to Network Projects in Gracedieu in 2002, working on asset replacement, maintenance and upgrading of the system from LV to 220kV. In 2010 he moved back to his spiritual home in underground construction Waterford as temporary supervisor. In 2011 he moved to HV Stations Waterford after the realignment of Networks, returning to station work and the odd cable joint!

An opportunity to return to the world of underground cables came in 2015 when Stephen was appointed as Technical Training Officer in the Networks Training Centre, Portlaoise.
Since then, he has imparted a huge array of his knowledge and experience to others through his role as Training officer. He now has plenty of time to pursue his interests in cycling, rowing, sea kayaking, motor bikes and trad music. We wish Stephen a long, happy, healthy retirement as the next chapter of his journey begins.
