Transit Of Mercury – St. Stephen’s Green TODAY
Irish Astronomical Society – Transit Of Mercury
The IAS will set up telescopes (specially equipped for safe solar observing) in St Stephens Green park (Guinness Plot near the bandstand), Dublin 2 between 11am and 4pm, so the public can view the transit of Mercury. The transit will not finish until early evening; for the later stages observing will transfer to Dunsink Observatory.
This will be the first transit of Mercury since 2006 (and the first from Ireland since 2003). The transit or passage of a planet across the face of the Sun is a relatively rare occurrence. As seen from Earth, only transits of Mercury and Venus are possible. There are approximately 13 transits of Mercury each century. Mercury will be a tiny spot crossing the solar disc between 12:12 hrs and 19:41 hrs (Irish Summer Time), start to finish.
All welcome. No charge. (Children must be supervised by adults).
