Haiti Update

haiti4.jpg

ElectricAid yesterday approved funding of €10,000 to Concern and Plan Ireland, for their relief and recovery work in the most badly-hit south of Haiti – after the complete devastation caused by Hurricane Matthew a week ago.

That’s as much as we can do from our existing resources, but we will also be committing all once-off donations received up to 25.10.2016 to this cause.

After publicising this yesterday, members and friends have donated almost €5,000 in less than one day. We thank you all, from the bottom of our hearts.

You can make once-off donations out of Payroll here

Don’t forget to change the drop-down to “once-off”

Every donation counts; every Euro helps!

You stood by the people of Haiti in 2010 – please stand by them again in their latest tragedy.

Thanks once again from ElectricAid.

Cyril’s Fundraising Cycle (23rd Sept) – Dublin to Leitrim – Thank YOU!!!

In response to several enquiries, this is to let you know that I survived my long-distance fundraiser cycle on 23rd Sept (Dublin-Leitrim). More importantly, I really want to express my sincere gratitude for your overwhelming generosity – I’m bowled over to be honest! The donations are heading in the direction of ?2,000 as you can see from my Just Giving page here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Cyril-Loughlin-D2D

The ‘peleton’ started out from the West County Hotel (Chapelizod) just after 8am and tackled the battle with city-bound morning traffic before gaining momentum after Lucan. My biggest fear, a strong Westerly wind, failed to materialise and we had a fine day, better than forecast. There was an unscheduled stop in Enfield, to deal with a puncture. Later, food stops in Mullingar and Longford kept us suitably energised and we arrived in Drumshanbo much earlier than anticipated before 4pm, just over 6.5hrs road-time. Compare and contrast with a time of 4+ hrs in my car on a Friday afternoon back in the 1980s (up to half of it getting from HO to Maynooth!). The leisure suite in the Lough Allen Hotel provided a most welcome refuge for an hour before rehydration was called for! I have to say it was a great experience all round.

Thank you all for both the financial and moral support (including those who responded to my earlier Ring of Kerry appeal). It means a lot to me but, more importantly, it is greatly appreciated by all in the Irish Cancer Society HQ – see picture of ‘thank you’ card received this week.

Take a bow all concerned!

Best wishes – Cyril

Retirement of Ollie Doherty TSS Mid West

Oliver Doherty TSS Rosbrien Limerick is retiring early on 14 Oct after only 50 years service. Born in Golden Co Tipp, he was made very welcome to Limerick and like all good Tipp hurlers can play good golf too.

Ollie was the former CSS Limerick for many years and was widely known as the operations expert of the South.

Ollie was (still is) the go to person for customer service, voltage complaints, new connections and all matters electrical and social..

He now hopes to juggle improving his golf handicap with babysitting grandchildren in his free time.

All of Ollie’s colleagues and friends through out ESB want to wish him health and happiness in his well earned retirement.

A function will be held later to mark the occasion.

Christmas Shoebox Appeal

is an opportunity for children and families to send gifts to children who would otherwise never receive anything at Christmas. By taking an average size shoe box or half a photocopier paper box, covering it with Christmas wrapping paper and filling it with paper, pencils, toothbrush, toothpaste, toys and sweets, children in Ireland can show that they are thinking of those less fortunate than themselves. A minimum donation of ?4 will cover the cost of transport, processing and distribution.

If you would like to donate a shoebox this year or volunteer to coordinate boxes in your area please contact Kevin Young at 27726 if you’d like to be involved.

Shoeboxes can be dropped to local collection points – AXA, FirstStop Tyres or Toymaster outlets by Friday November 11th.

Shoe box collection in the Dublin area will be coordinated by Kevin and will be collected from ESB 27 Lr. Fitzwilliam Street , Dublin 2, on Friday November 18th.

is run by TEAM HOPE which is an independent Irish, interdenominational Christian relief and development charity, (Irish charity number CHY 14524). TEAM HOPE is working in relief and development projects in over twenty countries, mainly in Africa, Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.

Working through a long established group of international partnerships, your shoebox gifts will be given into the hands of a needy child, irrespective of his or her race, religion, ethnicity, or background – who all equally deserve a shoebox gift.

The only criteria for receiving a shoebox is the need of the child.

This year TEAM HOPE are planning that shoeboxes from Ireland will go to street children, orphans, children in hospital, poor families, victims of war or other needy situations in the following countries:

Eastern Europe and former Soviet Union: Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Transnistria, Kosova, Albania

Africa: Burundi, Rwanda, Congo, Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique, Zimbabwe

Cisco Phone – Voice Mail

Voice Mail access from new Cisco Telephones

There is a handy way to access Voice Mail from the new Cisco telephones. Voice Mail is accessed by pressing the Message Button (16). The legacy Voice Mail system (26002) remains operational for staff who have not yet migrated to the new Cisco phone system. However voice mail messages on the Cisco phones cannot be accessed by dialling 26002.

The Message Waiting Lamp (1) will light in the event of a new voice mail message being recorded.

A range of telephony user guides is available at the link below.

Thank You from Margaret Fannin

Thank you to everyone who helped get me out the front door of ESB Networks office in Moynehall, Cavan on 19th Aug. Thanks to my colleagues and retired staff members who joined me in the canteen that morning. I really appreciated the cakes, tarts and flowers.

I would like to extend a very warm thanks to:

  • Cavan ESB Social Club for all their help in organising my retirement party in Errigal Hotel on 16th Sept. You had the hotel room well decorated and some of the photos brought a tear to my eye!
  • My colleagues and friends who travelled from all parts of the country to join me and my family on the night. It was wonderful to see you all and your presence meant a lot to me.
  • The retired staff who attended in large numbers. I hope you will mind me now as ‘the new kid on the block’.
  • Everyone who gave me such lovely gifts and all of you who contributed so generously to my presentations. I appreciate very much your kindness.
  • Those who sent cards, e-mails, text messages and phone calls.
  • To all of you for your support and advice over the years. With your help my job looked easy!

My retirement night was a night I will always remember. I leave ESB with fond memories. Please keep in touch and if you are ever in the Cootehill area, please look me up.

Thank you.

Best Wishes to all in ESBN

ESB Athletic Club & Safe Running @ Gateway

Club members and non-members alike are starting to move to Gateway, this is going to open up new park, beach and street run challenges either to / from the office or during lunchtime runs. Fortunately Head Office runs have had minimal incidents, mainly with trips and falls. In order to keep incidents down at Gateway the club has a few useful tips:

· Plan new routes taking care to note road crossings, using pedestrian crossings where available
· Be aware of pedestrians and drivers who may be unused to runners in and around Gateway
· You will be less familiar with junctions and routes initially so take greater care
· Make safe choices and don’t take risks with the traffic
· Wear hi-vis where possible as the mornings and evenings become darker
· If exploring new routes in groups, take extra care as chatting may distract you from vehicles and pedestrians
· Record any incidents whilst running on SHIELD as this could prevent similar incidents happening to fellow runners

Does your home pass our Burglary test?

Our team in Innovation (HomeHero) is creating a digital assistant for the home.

It has just been made available on trial for British homes and it includes a burglary simulator (it is a good time of year to check your home security).

The service also finds the cheapest energy deals and advises on wifi performance.

Anyone can try it on Facebook (search for @yourhomehero) and it works best on the Messenger app
