Farewell & Thanks

Ciaran Hand is retiring /
After 43 years memorable years with ESB, Ciaran Hand is leaving us on 9th June. Ciaran’s journey with ESB started in Chapel Street in Dundalk in 1979 – where he worked as a Clerical Officer initially in Materials and then moved to the Consumers Unit. As Dundalk evolved from being a District office to a Regional office so too did Ciaran’s career where he went on from being a team lead in Customer Accounting Northern Region to establishing the unitised Commercial & Industrial Billing team for all Customer Supply. In January 2007 his move to Dublin started as he took up the role of MIS & Controls manager for Customer Supply which involved splitting his working week between Dundalk and Dublin. In 2008 he moved permanently to Dublin (Clanwilliam House) to take up the role of Business Process Manager in BP&IT and then in 2010 joined the CREST Market opening project as the Customer Operations lead. Following the establishment of Electric Ireland, Ciaran has held a number of management positions across the IT and Digital area. Most recently (last 6 years) Ciaran was instrumental in ESB’s entry into the GB residential market where he led the development and roll out of the IT systems and processes for ESB Energy.
Ciaran’s unique Business and IT knowledge and experience combined with his technical ability across business Process design & Re-engineering, Customer Journeys, Data & Analytics, GDPR, IT and Project management was a huge asset to ESB and the effects of this can be seen and remain in place across areas he worked in. However its Ciaran’s people skills and ability to share his experiences & knowledge and coach team members to be creative, innovative and add value that is his greatest strength and stand out contribution to ESB. Ciaran will be missed but he is leaving in the knowledge that everything he touched upon has been passed on to others and will continue to add value. We wish Ciaran and his family a long and happy retirement, spending more time with his grandkids, keeping fit & going to the gym, playing more golf, supporting his favourite football teams, travelling and taking it a bit easier.
We would like to invite all Ciaran’s friends and colleagues from over the years in ESB to join him for an informal few drinks and send off on 9th June from 5.30pm in Doheny & Nesbitt’s, Baggot Street.

Larry Commons is retiring / Larry Commons
Following 35 years’ service in ESB, Larry’s last day in the company is Friday the 17th of June 2022. He will be having a few drinks to celebrate his retirement in Doheny & Nesbitt’s on Baggot Street at 7pm on the 17th of June and would like to extend a warm welcome to all his colleagues past and present to join him on the night.

Seamus Devine is retiring / Pat Beechinor
On the 2nd June, Seamus Devine will bring his 41 years in ESB to a close and begin his next exciting chapter. Given Seamus’ warm personality, desire for learning and finding solutions to support work colleagues and the business – it is no surprise that a lot of people around the country will know him through the numerous roles he has carried out during his ESB career. Seamus joined ESB on the Graduate Engineer program in September 1981 and like many graduates spent his first 5 years in Distribution Dept in Osprey House, Dublin. In 1986, as part of the graduate rotation he was assigned for regional experience to Portlaoise District and worked in Network Planning. He was later moved to Waterford District under his first ESB reorg – Miller Barry. Then in 1988, his next graduate rotation assigned the man from Strabane to Limerick – which unknown to Seamus at the time would be the part of the world where he would call home. In Rosbrien, he continued to work in the planning and technical services area and after just six months was successful in being appointed to his first substantive role of Distribution Engineer. Then in 2004 his big break came when he was appointed the Technical Services Manager role for the Mid-West Division. In 2005, he was assigned to Area Manager Tipperary/Roscrea. Following changes in the local team in 2007 he was assigned to Area Manager Limerick/Ennis and this is where he remained until the end of 2012. 2013 heralded a new national role of Technical Performance Manager looking after IT and Mobile solutions. This saw Seamus’ love of enhancing the role of technology grow and with the team introduced iPhones and Apps to ESB Networks, kept SAP running and launched G-Designer. While in this role, his experience of the Area Manager role and his drive for supporting the delivery teams to serve the customers saw him return to play his part in the response to Storm Darwin in 2014 as the Storm Manager, Tipperary. OER arrived in late 2018 and a new challenge beckoned as the Productivity & Capability Manager with the Programme & Performance team which saw a lot of work on planning the company’s resource capability and working on the regulatory submissions for the fault activity. Then in Spring of 2020, just as COVID was dawning, Seamus landed what he would call his ‘dream job’ of Business Support Manager, Central Region. At that time, with everyone adjusting to a global pandemic and with the new requirement for Business Support to support field-teams while themselves adjusting to working remotely – this gave Seamus the ideal opportunity to apply his extensive knowledge of the business and technology to assist the Central team to set-up working from home and enabled them to continue giving their high-quality support to the delivery teams during those unprecedented times. So, after all those years of Seamus’ relaxed and good-humoured style of working but still being very conscious about doing things to the highest standard, his focus on finding solutions and always taking every opportunity to help and support his work colleagues in their own roles Seamus will now have more time to spend with his family, friends and pastimes. Seamus’ last day at work is the 2nd June but he would like to invite his many friends from around ESB to an informal get together in Bobby Byrnes pub in Limerick on Thursday 26th May from 7pm onwards. Seamus is holding a joint event with colleagues that have recently retired Stephen Conway and Tom Flynn. We wish Seamus, Margaret and their family the very best for a long healthy and happy retirement which will allow Seamus more time for travel, keeping the garden looking its best and trips north to Strabane from Cratloe, Co. Clare.

Stephen Conway is retired and now celebrating / Virgil Porter
After nearly 42 years of dedicated service our colleague and friend, Stephen Conway, retired earlier this year. Due to the then COVID restrictions, we were not able to properly acknowledge and celebrate that important event. We now would like to invite Stephen’s many friends and colleagues from across ESB to an informal get together in https://www.bobbybyrnes.ie/contact-us/ pub in Limerick (https://www.google.ie/maps/place/Limerick,+V94+CD73/@52.6566991,-8.6334094,15z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x485b5c62ce8e5615:0xd092bc2762663d01!8m2!3d52.6566996!4d-8.6334094) on Thursday 26th May from 7pm. Stephen is holding a joint retirement event that evening with his colleagues Tom Flynn and Seamus Devine. I would like to wish Stephen and his wife Ann, the very best of health and happiness in their retirement. I know Stephen is really looking forward to meeting up in person with you.

Tom Flynn is retiring /
Tom Flynn has decided to retire from ESB after more than 40 years exceptional service. Tom started as a clerical officer in service repair in Rosbrien, a section that provided him with a great education in how to interact with people. He quickly progressed through the ranks, working in management accounting, revenue and then progressing on to the new stores in Ballysimon. This was an exciting time in his career as he was fully involved in setting up a new operation from the start, something that would be replicated in later years. Around this time, Tom also completed a Business Studies Degree in UL and he has continued with further education and lifelong learning during his career in ESB. After the stores rationalisation which saw the closure of Ballysimon, Tom became Materials Services Supervisor for the MidWest Division. This was at a time of huge change in the company as there was a huge ramp-up due to NRP. Again, Tom provided an excellent service to the many people that he worked with. Tom then took something of a leap of faith into the environmental function that was set up in the Materials area. For some time, Tom alone was the Environmental Department in Networks, but he gradually built a team around him as he spread the environmental message. The robust structures and detailed procedures that exist in the Environmental Area presently are testament to the hard work and vision provided by Tom over the years. As everybody knows, Tom is warm and approachable and ever willing to share his huge knowledge in the environmental area. His professionalism and ability to respond to very difficult situations is recognised across the Networks Organisation. He has left a long lasting and very positive impact on the company and will be greatly missed, especially by those of us that have had the privilege of working closely with him over the years. Tom’s last day at work is the 6th May but he would like to invite his friends from ESB to an informal get together in Bobby Burns pub in Limerick on Thursday 26th May from 7pm on. Tom is holding a joint event with his colleagues Stephen Conway and Seamus Devine. I would like to wish Tom a long and happy retirement and thank him for his commitment and service to ESB. He can now look forward to spending more quality time with Noreen, Brian and AnneMarie, pursuing his many interests and hobbies, and catching up with all the jobs that have been laid out for him.
