Our colleague and good friend Richard King has decided to retire from ESB after more than 40 years exceptional service.
Richard started his career in Distribution Department after graduating as an electrical engineer in 1982. After 2 years he moved on to Haddington Road where he was involved with many overseas projects including Jubail and Ghana. After 3 years, Richard decided that he would like some regional experience and was appointed as Planning Engineer in Waterford.
The South East Region was to become a huge part of Richard’s life going forward. In 1989, Richard was appointed as Customer Services Engineer in Enniscorthy and he held a number of engineering jobs here over the following years.
In 2001, Richard took up a role in Contracted Projects Group as NRP was kicking off and spent some time managing the integration of small contractors. He returned to Enniscorthy as Area Manager and held both roles for a period of time.
In 2010, Ger Buckley asked Richard to review CMP13 and this started Richard’s career in the safety area; a role that was well served by his commitment to ensuring the safety of all who worked with him over the years. Richard remained in the safety area until 2018. During this time, he completed a Certificate and Post Graduate Diploma qualification in Safety and became a recognised expert in the safety area.
In 2018, Richard’s expertise was extremely useful as he transferred to the Networks Fibre organisation where he worked on the interface arrangements between SIRO and Networks. In mid-2020, Richard transferred to the Networks Environmental organisation where his work on the environmental aspects of HV substations was innovative and original.
Richard has made many friendships in Networks over the years. His professionalism and great knowledge are paired with an affable manner and good sense of humour. Richard is always approachable and willing to share his expertise with others and will be greatly missed by us all.
Richards last day at work is the 17th May but he would like to invite his friends from ESB to an informal get together in The Bailey Pub in Enniscorthy on Friday 19th May from 8pm to celebrate his retirement. I would like to wish Richard a long and happy retirement.
