Declan O’Brien retires/Jen Lucy
Jen Lucy After almost 39 years, Declan O’Brien is retiring on 13th June 2019. Declan’s contribution to ESB over the years has been tremendous and wide-ranging. He started out in Generation as the youngest shift engineer in the country at the time, working in Tarbert, and went on to take up further jobs in O&M at North Wall and Poolbeg, before becoming station manager for those two sites. He’s also worked in key roles in Human Resources, Change Management, Technical and Safety Management (ESB International) and Strategy & Regulation, making many friends along the way.
Throughout his time here, Declan’s technical expertise, managerial experience and stakeholder skills have really steered the evolution of our Generation business. Most recently, as part of our Brighter Future strategy, Declan led the Diversity Strategic Initiative, which is helping to ensure we have the best capability across ESB to meet the challenges ahead.
Along the way, Declan’s also been a great manager, coach and mentor to many of us here, as well as a friend and strong support. Whether guiding us through day-to-day challenges, figuring out career development or thinking through the big picture, Declan’s insight has always been invaluable. His good humour, patience and friendship leaves a lasting impact on everyone who meets him.
Declan would be delighted if you could join him on 13th June at the Waterloo Bar on Baggott Street, Dublin 2, from 5.30pm onwards to mark the occasion, for a night of music, song and memories shared. (And, knowing Declan, there may even be a guitar or two on hand to help things go with a swing!) Also, as a keen motorcyclist, Declan is planning to ride Route 66 in the USA next year, raising funds for Temple Street Hospital along the way. If you’d like to support Declan, you can donate online here: https://give.everydayhero.com/ie/declan-s-route-66-for-temple-street.
This is in lieu of a collection and we wish Declan all the very best for both this and all his future adventures. Looking forward to seeing you on 13th June.
